FERTILIZING Sparingly use a general purpose 10-10-10 once every 3 weeks to 4 weeks from Spring to Summer for faster growth. Alternatively, use a slow-release fertilizer 3 times a year. Halt fertilizing from the Fall to Winter, then begin again in the Spring. Avoid getting fertilizer on the leaves, flowers, and stems. Water before and after applying fertilizer. Do not over-fertilize, as this will result in more foliage and less flowers.
FLOWER Long lasting, showy lavender blooms.
MONTH OF COLOR Summer
FRUIT Brown or black pods. When mature, they dry and split, then release disk shaped seeds. Inedible.
ALLERGENS, TOXICITY AND ANIMALS Non-toxic to animals. (Dogs, cats, horses, humans.)
COMMENTS Fast growing, gaining 3′ or more every year. Excellent wind resistance and disease resistance when mature. Great tree for lavender colored blooms and lovely green foliage in the Summer. In the Winter, we enjoy the beautiful bark and complex branching. Seeds are a food source for birds. Remove any Spanish moss if it appears, as it will take over the tree.
